President Donald Trump took to his Twitter feed early Friday morning to respond to criticism over his decision to recognize Jerusalem as the capital of Israel. The tweet follows intense opposition to the move by Arab, Muslim and European critics.
Trump has also promised to relocate the U.S. Embassy in Israel to Jerusalem from its current location in Tel Aviv.
President Trump’s tweet carried the caption, “I fulfilled my campaign promise — others didn’t.”
Check it out, per Fox News:
The tweet includes clips of former presidents Bill Clinton, George W. Bush and Barack Obama and indicates the year of each clip.
Clinton is seen in 1992 saying, “Jerusalem is still the capital of Israel and must remain an undivided city accessible to all.”
Bush is seen in 2000. “As soon as I take office, I will move the United States ambassador to the city Israel has chosen as its capital,” he says.
Obama is seen in 2008 saying, “I continue to say that Jerusalem will be the capital of Israel. I have said that before and I will say it again.”
Trump said he will soon instruct the State Department to begin moving the U.S. Embassy to Jerusalem. It stills remains unclear, however, when that instruction will become reality as there is quite a bit of bureaucratic red tape to untangle.
In January, Republican Sens. Dean Heller, Marco Rubio and Ted Cruz introduced legislation calling for the embassy to be moved to Jerusalem. The Obama administration abstained from a U.N. Security Council vote earlier the previous year to condemn Israeli settlement expansion in the West Bank.
Per the Jerusalem Post:
“I have no doubt that evangelicals played a meaningful role in this decision,” said Johnnie Moore, a California pastor who serves as a spokesman for a council of leading evangelicals that advises the White House. “I don’t believe it would have happened without them.”
Conservative Christians have long argued that formally recognizing Jerusalem, home to sites holy to the Muslim, Jewish and Christian religions, was long overdue following a 1995 congressional mandate to move the embassy from Tel Aviv. In Trump and Vice President Mike Pence, they found their most sympathetic audience.
